about

Space Quest I's themes were originaly composed/arranged by Mark Crowe. When the game was ported to the Apple IIGS, the music was (most-likely) arranged by Al Lowe, who did most of the Apple IIGS music arranging and porting. The music would first be arranged on the Roland MT-32, then downgraded for the Apple IIGS's inferior sound system (which, unlike the other versions of the game, actually used MIDI data).

Since a similiar SYSEX was used for the Roland MT-32 versions of each of the Apple IIGS's ports, the same SYSEX can be used nearly 100% for each of the Roland MT-32 versions, with an exception of Space Quest I, which had definitely been composed on a completely different SYSEX. Since this SYSEX data can no longer be located, the SYSEX used for the Space Quest II recordings has been used with the patches adjusted to what may be the proper instruments. So this soundtrack should be thought of as a reconstruction of the pieces as maybe were originally composed.

Because"Unused BGM - version 1" and "Falling" were not carried over into Roland MT-32 MIDI format from the original game, for sake of completeness, I have created unofficial versions of these two missing jingles myself from the 1986/1987 editions' data.

This soundtrack has been recorded directly from an authentic Roland MT-32 from the game's MIDI data. Due to the hardware limitations of the MT-32 causing polyphony problems, if necessary, each channel has been recorded independently and then merged into a single track. Therefore, no notation data is lost through polyphony limitations and the tracks may be heard at their fullest.

Since the original filenames and titles are unknown, all track titles have been created by myself and should not be considered official at this time.

The archival soundtrack series contains all known music from said title, including 1 second jingles, unused music, beta versions, and more.

Soundtrack and any bonus materials may not be re-distributed elsewhere without the express permission of Xeen Music.

$0.60 of each sale automatically goes to Activision Blizzard for music licensing.
